Jed Lowrie - he of the 3B/SS eligibility - was sent to the 15-day DL today with a "left wrist sprain", indicating a ligament sprain. This was the same wrist that suffered a non-displaced bone fracture last season, which sapped his ability to drive the ball with any meaningful force. Lowrie will undergo a battery of tests to determine a more clear diagnosis than that of "wrist sprain" - and they will probably try to rule out a re-emergence of the wrist fracture with CT scan.
After hitting .343 during spring training, Lowrie struggled mightily to begin the season, going a paltry 1-for-18.
The Red Sox now have to rely on Nick Green and Gil Velazquez as their starting shortstop duo, at least until Julio Lugo can return from knee surgery. Velazquez is a plus defender, but leaves much to be desired at the plate. Green is a journeyman who has played for the Braves, Rays, Yankees, and Mariners.
