Teixeira Sits with Wrist Tendonitis

Mark Teixeira did not start today’s game against Kansas City, as he has a mild case of left wrist tendonitis. While a minor injury indeed, tendonitis can worsen if not addressed by rest and proper treatment - usually based around anti-inflammatory medication, wrist splinting, and therapeutic modalities (iontophoresis, ice, etc.). Expect him to miss one or two starts before returning to action. The larger question is, what caused the tendonitis to begin with? He said that the irritation began during the middle part of the week against Baltimore, perhaps when making a play at first base. He has more pain hitting righthanded, indicating that he has more pain with act of ulnar deviation of the left wrist that occurs when accelerating the bat head through the zone.

Said Teixeira, "I don’t know exactly what happened, but I woke up Thursday morning and it was real sore. Because it’s my top hand, I could swing lefthanded fine, but I knew today I was going to have to test it out in BP and it feels pretty sore hitting righthanded."
