Chris Carpenter exited tonight’s game in the 6th inning with what appeared to be a right shoulder strain following a fastball thrown to Jim Edmonds that was well out of the strike zone, down and inside. After being assessed by the team’s training staff, he was immediately removed from the game. At this point, it is anyone’s guess as to how long he will be out, if at all, but the Cardinals will likely have to view this as a setback in his recovery. A stay on the DL seems logical. He had thrown a very solid 5.1 innings, allowing 6 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 2.
Update 8/11: Carpenter feels that he will be able to make his next scheduled start, but we’ll have to wait and see how he responds to throwing on the side over the next couple of days to see if he’ll need any time on the DL. The fact that Carpenter felt a strain in just his second start (and only 10.1 innings of total work) after coming off the DL gives you some idea of where he is at in terms of his strength/conditioning.

Wow, it’s a setback? Cutting edge analysis!
Thanks, Rich. I can always count on you for a positive comment! Thanks for reading.
Don’t take it personally. Clearly he doesn’t read often or else he’d know this is one of the absolute best baseball blogs in the world. Really, it’s rare that I almost feel guilty when regularly getting something so great for free - and reading your blog is one of the times…
Keep up the great work.
I concur with Jon, word for word.
