Eric Byrnes and Troy Percival re-injured hamstrings tonight - proof positive that hamstring injuries are slow to heal, and that they can reoccur easily.
Percival injured his left hamstring while backing up a play at third base in the 9th inning in tonight’s win against Boston. Though J.P. Howell was the one to come in to lock down the save after Percival exited, it would seem likely that Dan Wheeler would be the next in line to close should Percival need to head back to the DL. It seems like a foregone conclusion that he will head to the DL, but we’ll have to wait for the final word from the Rays medical staff.
Byrnes pulled up lame on his way to third base while sprinting during a stolen base attempt tonight. He apparently re-injured his left hamstring. Keep in mind, Byrnes was on the DL with bilateral (both) hamstring strains, so they will probably place him on the DL right away so that he does not return early and aggravate either of the hamstrings. Chad Tracy will probably benefit the most from this injury, as he will get regular playing time at first base, with Conor Jackson moving to the outfield. Jackson already has outfield eligibility in Yahoo leagues, and Tracy is eligible at first base and third base.
