Wang’s Diagnosis: Lisfranc Sprain and Peroneus Longus Tear

It has been revealed that Chien Ming Wang suffered a Lisfranc sprain and a tear of the Peroneus Longus tendon in his right foot , which will sideline him for a lengthy period of time - perhaps ending his season. The only good news (for what it is worth) is that it does not appear as though the injury is serious enough to warrant surgery.

He is set to be on crutches with a walking boot for at least the next 6 weeks, at which time he will be re-evaluated to see if his weight bearing restrictions can be modified. Even once he is out of the boot and off crutches, he will need to go through lengthy rehab in order to gradually reintroduce force into the midfoot.

Complicating the recovery process to a degree is the involvement of the Peroneus Longus tendon, which provides lateral stability to the ankle. Both of these injuries are significant limitations for a pitcher, as the foot needs to stabilize when in single leg stance, and both of these parts of the anatomy are crucial for maintaining dynamic stability.

Let the rumor mill start churning, as the Yankees are certain to make a trade for a starting pitcher. Buster Olney mentioned tonight on Baseball Tonight that the list could include: Erik Bedard, Bronson Arroyo, Joe Blanton, and Randy Wolf. The Yankees are unlikely to offer a huge package of their promising young talent in order to land C.C. Sabathia.
