Conor Jackson has been having a truly outstanding year, but he will now miss the next 3-5 days with a right Quadriceps strain that he suffered late in the game on Friday night while backing out of the batter’s box on an inside pitch. The MRI results are pending, but manager Bob Melvin does not think this is something that will require a stay on the DL. Since speed is not part of Jackson’s game, and he plays first base, he should be able to return fairly soon from what seems to be a minor strain. They should ensure that he can run the bases, field grounders, and take throws at first base (stretching for short throws) without pain before reinserting him in the lineup.
A potentially more serious injury was sustained by David Ortiz in Saturday night’s win against the Orioles. On a pitch that Ortiz fouled off down the left field line, he felt a "pop" in his left wrist and was clearly not comfortable afterwards - exiting the game with the count at 3-1. X-rays were taken and were negative, but an MRI should be taken soon. Currently, it is being diagnosed as a left wrist sprain, indicating that they feel it may be a ligamentous injury. We will have to await further examination and testing by Boston’s medical staff to determine the severity of the injury.
Said Terry Francona, "He took a swing and felt something in his wrist…It was very tender. That is what we know right now. Obviously, it is a concern. We will wait to hear what happened."
It is unlikely that he will play on Sunday. Consider him day-to-day for now, but a ligament sprain could linger for many weeks and a DL stint is not out of the realm of possibility.
