A lot of players are coming off the DL, or are set to be coming off the DL shortly. Check out the post regarding Add-Worthy players who are returning . Now, we move ahead to the breaking news for this wonderful Sunday afternoon in MLB:
Yovani Gallardo, SP, MIL: Having returned from the DL today in his first start back against Cincinnati, he threw a fine quality start - 7 IP, 4 H, 3 BB, and 4 K’s. He did not get credited with the win, however, as Reds’ ace Aaron Harang spun a gem and matched him stride for stride. Gallardo exited the game with the game tied 1-1. It looks like Gallardo will be safe to start in all formats right away. Side note: Eric Gagne blew another save (his third of the young season) by allowing 3 runs in the bottom of the 10th.
Jimmy Rollins, SS, PHI: "He’s got a sprained ankle, and he’s healing and he’s doing quite well. We have no plans to put him on the DL. Jimmy is progressing and doing better." These are the words of Phillies’ General Manager Ruben Amaro, Jr.
One day later, Rollins is apparently heading to the 15-day DL for the first time in his outstanding, 8-year career and will miss the next two weeks. The move is not retroactive because he was able to play yesterday. His sprained left ankle apparently did not hold up well after coming off the bench in Saturday’s game.
Just another example why you really cannot trust GM-speak.
I do not understand why the Phillies let their best player come into a game when he was clearly still limited. He was saying he was still limited, and Charlie Manuel even said he was still limited . I don’t get why they risked further injury to their star shortstop. In my previous Rollins post , I had noted that they would be best served letting his ankle heal before bringing him back, because these injuries can linger if they are constantly irritated. Ligaments are very easily aggravated due to their high amount nerve innervation.
Due to the Phillies’ inability to allow healing time for Jimmy Rollins’ ankle, they will now have to suffer two weeks without him. The Good Phight disagrees with how the Phillies (mis)handled this situation.
Alex Rodriguez, 3B, NYY: He strained his right Quadriceps while running out a ground ball today. With the Yankees having a day off on Monday, that will give him some time to recover. It did not sound like anything major. He could miss no games at all, or possibly a handful. Even very minor strains can be limiting. And minor strains can become big strains…weekly roster leagues need to keep him active, despite the uncertainty of his playing time. This is A-Rod we’re talking about.
Gary Sheffield, DH, DET: This guy should definitely be sent to the DL. He has too much going on, and by playing through his injuries, his body is not being allowed to heal. His shoulder is still acting up and he has mentioned in the past that he does not have full range of motion (not a good sign for anyone, especially someone who is playing professional sports). This is the same shoulder that he had offseason surgery on to repair a torn glenoid labrum (cartilage).
He (Sheffield) continues to mention "scar tissue" and that he needs to get it to "break up." What this leads me to believe is that he has developed post-surgical arthrofibrosis. Says Sheffield, "Obviously, I can’t throw a baseball right now and can’t really reach across my body…If you watch me do it with my left and then watch me do it with my right, you’ll notice the difference."
In reference to his shoulder not loosening up he adds, "I didn’t feel like I was getting extended…It’s like I get there and [the shoulder] just stops. There’s nothing you can do. I try to swing harder and it slows it down even more."
All of these comments certainly lead me to believe that he has an arthrofibrotic shoulder - aka Adhesive Capsulitis, or "Frozen Shoulder." It is realistic to believe that he will need a DL stint for further rehabilitation. If this does not work, the surgeon would likely have to perform a manipulation under anesthesia - where the surgeon manually manipulates the shoulder in a specific way to break up scar tissue. The other option would be a lysis, in which the surgeon would go in through an arthroscope and use instruments to release the scar tissue.
He also is dealing with a torn finger tendon that is in no way fully healed yet.
Chipper Jones, 3B, ATL: He strained his right Quadriceps this afternoon legging out a double. Same injury as A-Rod, but we are talking about Chipper Jones here. This guy couldn’t make it through a full season without some form of a muscle strain even if he had a non-muscular, robotic body. He would find a way. This is the same Quad that he originally strained on April 9th. He had not missed any games due to this. You only have to assume here that he will miss 2-3 games at a minimum.
Rafael Soriano, RP, ATL: Just when you thought he would be back in action this week…it is now being reported that he has been experiencing discomfort in his right elbow (Tommy John surgery in ‘04) this past weekend every time he attempted to throw, and that he will not be activated from the DL on Tuesday as anticipated. This certainly is not good news for owners of Soriano, but hopefully those who do own him managed to snag Manny Acosta from the free agent list. It looks as though Soriano will be out this week, and perhaps longer. He will have to throw from the mound in a pain-free manner before being allowed to return to action. It is certainly sounding more and more like Acosta will be the closer for the foreseeable future.
Curtis Granderson, OF, DET: He will require at least two more starts in the minors before rejoining the Tigers lineup, but should be back by mid-week at the earliest. Stacked teams in weekly transaction leagues might want to roll the dice and activate him, as he could see action for the latter half of the week.
Wandy Rodriguez, SP, HOU: During home game appearances, this guy is a H2H and daily transaction league stud. Fantasy owners will have to wait at least 2 weeks until they stream him again, due to a strained left groin. This is the groin that he pushes off the mound with, so in this scenario, I would expect a rehab start or two on the back end of his DL stint.
